Report surfaced on Wednesday, March 29 that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was abolishing the computer based testing mode of conducting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
It was said to be dumping the CBT because of the low computer literacy level of candidates across the country.
In an attempt to make CBT friendly, JAMB introduced the use of 8 keys without a mouse
The board has debunked this report, describing it as misleading while also restating its determination to continue all its examinations using CBT mode.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, March 30, the spokesperson of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the headline: “JAMB dumps CBT, adopts eight keys”, was misleading and capable of causing panic, distortion and confusion in the minds of Nigerians particularly the candidates planning to take the 2017 UTME. “At the meeting, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, restated the determination of JAMB to continue to innovate on policies that will ease the phobia for CBT, one of which is the introduction of the use of 8 keys without a mouse and nowhere was the issue of dumping CBT contemplated,” Benjamin said.
According to him, the CBT will still be used for the forthcoming UTME.
The use of 8 keys without a mouse was introduced by JAMB to make CBT friendly. The 8 keys are;
1. A - for choosing option A in response to questions
2. B - for choosing the B option
3. C - represents option C
4. D - for selecting option D
5. P – represents previous question
6. N – is for next question
7. S – is for submit
8. R – is for reverse
Dozee News earlier reported that from this year, candidates sitting for the UTME would spend two hours instead of three hours to write the exam.
So far, a total of 240,000 candidates are said to have registered for the examination which has been scheduled for May 20.
However, candidates have been finding it hard to register for the examination. Many have been lamenting about invalid ePINs.
According to JAMB, the cause of the invalid pin being experienced by candidates was due to a very high rate of candidates buying ePINS without creating their profile first, incorrect email address provided at the bank teller and unforeseen technical issues in the PIN vending system.
